“Planning and implementation”
Element 3.5- Plan and adapt instruction for diverse student needs, adding specific accommodations and/or modifications for student exceptionalities.
Artifact: EDU 255 lab D self analysis forms
Date: Fall 2011
Reflection:
Throughout EDU 255 we were required to watch video of our lesson and reflect on our experience. Lab D we were not only video tapped we had a microphone wired to us so we could hear everything we said. This lets us analyze things we normally wouldn’t notice like how many times we use student’s names. This process allows the teacher candidate to critique the lesson and see what she/he needs to improve on. Watching video is a great way to see what needs to be adjusted; it also allows one to see if their students were enjoying themselves or if they were not interested. The review of the lesson was also a confidence booster, it also showed me that teaching is for me and I do impact lives. I enjoyed seeing smiles and my lessons have success. Teaching a skill like zumba which I was not familiar with was something that was difficult but helped me really break down the lesson. Lab D we were designated a skill which was out of our comfort zone. Not only did this make us more familiar with that skill, it allowed us to really plan ahead and initially teach our selves first. I enjoyed this lab and do not mind being put in situations which will help me progress into the best teacher I can be.
In order to be an excellent physical education teacher one needs to have the ability to go back and review lessons and make changes which will benefit their students. Always eager to learn and wanting to improve are qualities in someone who is a physical educator teacher.

Lab D Self Analysis-
After watching my video over and over I realized many things that could improve how I teach. This video and microphone really helps because we can see and hear everything that goes on. I saw some really good things but also saw a lot of stuff I need to improve on. I think with my first drill the Zumba tag I could have not just demonstrated the dance, I could have allowed them to try the dance out also. Then I could have seen if anyone needed more advice on how to complete the dance. When teaching the other skills, I could have counted differently, counting to 8 each time they do a move while teaching is a very hard skill to do. I could have count 1 for each 8 count, so I would only be counting to two on each skill. This would make it a lot easier to walk around and assess the students and give them more feedback. After watching the tape I realized I could have said minor things to a few people and it would have helped them learn the dance a lot better. This was the main problem with my lesson, but when I was planning it I didn’t really think of it. Now that I went through this experience I know to switch up how I count when teaching dance or zumba. Also I should have showed the skill with the music on, these students picked up quick but I think high school students would need a demonstration with the beat so they knew how to dance. I also could have allowed them to dance longer, I was too worried about the sequence and the order of the dance, and I should have allowed them to move more. If I had a next class I would not teach another skill I would just allow them to use the skills I taught them and do the routine a few times in whole. The whole routine really gets the heart rate up and is a great workout. With managing the class, I should have explained the first drill while they were all at their poly spots then said go and allowed them to play. I moved them before I explained the game; if this was a real class they would have been distracted and lost. I also should have set up boundaries for my first game before starting the lesson, maybe use cones. Also starting the dance when the music starts is a hard thing to do because I have to press play and start the 5,6,7,8. I would have pressed play then started to count when she started to sing or something. That would make it flow nice and make it easier on my part. I should have also played with the ipod dock before I started the lesson; because I didn’t know how to start or stop it and it caused a problem a few times when I was teaching. I should have walked around more to pay attention to the students in the back of the group, I made my way around the circle once but that isn’t enough to make the students feel a part of the group, even if I didn’t walk around I should have gave some positive feedback from the front to make them feel welcomed. With feedback, I should have praised the class more, I talked to individuals a lot but did not complement the whole class enough; I could have said to change one thing to the whole class and helped multiple students at once. This is something I need to work on but now I know it is a problem. A huge problem I need to fix as soon as possible is saying “GUYS”, this lab I said it way too much. After I taught that was one of the first things that went through my head. Teaching something that you have never done before is a challenge, I did not expect zumba to be so difficult but once I started to prepare for the lesson I knew it was a very hard skill to learn. I plan on taking a few classes on break so I can be well rounded because I plan on teaching this in the future. I love doing these assessments because every time I watch myself I learn more, I hope we keep doing assessments like these in my future classes here at Cortland.
