Al Mercado
"Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." -Marva Collins
Welcome. My name is Al Mercado, physical education and athletics are my passion. I am very honored in the fact that I can positively affect so many lives. Not only do I teach physical education, I live it. My hobbies include weight training, wrestling, soccer, running, swimming, coaching, fishing, hiking, snowboarding and many more. I love to live a healthy lifestyle that is very active; I often wear a pedometer which insures I complete the desired 10,000 steps a day.
Currently, I am a Physical Education teacher at Rye City School District. I teach secondary PE; educating students on how to be active for a lifetime. My long term goal is to implement more lifelong activities into the curriculum. A few ideas I have are, fly fishing and snow shoeing. My short term goals this year are to certify every one of my students in CPR. I am also implementing the BFS (bigger faster stronger) weight training curriculum into my PE classes.
I also have another responsibility at Rye; I am the Assistant Athletic Director. We have over 85 athletic teams including crew, squash and rugby. Being a leader is something that comes natural to me. I enjoy overseeing athletics, safety and physical education. Learning the "behind the scenes" skills is something that will improve my professionalism. GO GARNETS!
This summer I am the new Aquatic Sports Director at Shenorock Country Club in Rye New York. I will oversee boating, fishing and swimming. The club is located on the Long Island Sound and as Aquatic Director, keeping members safe is my number one priority. My staff and I will be supervising members and children who come to camp at Shenorock. I have been managing waterfronts for 10 years and am excited to bring my knowledge to this club.
Thank you for visiting.
