"Impact on Student Learning"
Element 5.3- Utilize the reflective cycle to implement change in teacher performance, student learning, and instructional goals and decisions.
Artifact: EDU 355 Lesson 3 Reflection
Date: Spring 2012
Reflection:
During lesson three of my 355 lab, I was teaching fifth graders at South Hills Elementary School. We were working on passing to partners in our hockey unit. My instant activity consisted of fitness and cooperation. The students participated in a variation of clean the yard. We used newspapers to play with because I wanted to show the students a lot of materials can be used as equipment to play with. In the reflection it goes into how to play the game and my unique variation to make the game have cooperation involved.
During the lesson we worked on knowing the proper stance when passing the puck or ball, teamwork, listening skills and accuracy in our passes. Working in groups, everyone moving and having equal opportunity to use the equipment is how I prefer to run my lessons. At least 50 percent of class time students should be involved in moderate to vigorous physical activity; this is a must in physical education.
The students enjoyed my lesson and worked on all three learning domains, Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor. Reflecting on my lesson is important, I always change lessons and will never stop learning. Having a host teacher to give feedback is a great advantage. Working on demonstrating each skill and activity is something I need to work on. Showing the students exactly what I would like to see is the best way to keep confusion down. Overall I am excited to keep learning and mastering the skill of teaching.

South Hills/ lesson 3
The instant activity for today’s class was called clean the yard. I decided to use newspapers with this class because I was going to teach them about how anything can be used as equipment to play with. I was teaching 5th graders this time and I broke them up into groups of two. Everything was set up before they came and they were excited to see what the newspaper was used for. I also threw a twist into the game of clean the yard. Not only are they going to make the ammo within a certain amount of time as a group. Once the time is up from throwing all the trash onto the other
teams yard, the team has 3 seconds to clean up their yard. The way they clean up is important, the team has to hold one another’s shoulders, only the first person in line is allowed to bend down and grab a piece of garbage, then he/she passes the garbage down the line to the last person who was
holding a bag. Working together as a team will allow the students to clean up a lot of garbage and maybe win the round. The students liked this game, so we played two rounds; each team won a round so I was happy. I quickly explained how the garbage bags can be tied up and now we have a volley ball or kick ball.
After the instant activity we started to work on passing because we were still in our hockey unit. I laid poly spots all around the gymnasium after explaining some cues that would make passing more successful. I asked the students to link arms with a partner and then walk over and grab a stick of their choice and a ball, yarn ball or puck. We are going to play a passing game, the students move around space and pass to one another. The person receiving the ball or puck has to have one foot on a poly spot when receiving. If not the pass doesn’t count, most number of passes wins.
The second activity needed four to a group, so I assigned groups of two to pair up. Then I had 4 colored balls where everyone can see, I told everyone in the group to pick their own color. Then I told red to start with the puck or ball. I told them when I yell a color out pass to that color. The students had to remember which color was which group member and pass successfully. This was more like a game because the students had a time limit and had to think quickly. Also used some
cognitive because they had to remember the colors and some affective when listening to the colors. The students really liked this game and we played in for a while. Then I added another puck/ball whatever they felt more comfortable with and told them to pass clock wise. Once they could do this well I told them to play hot potato but making sure not to pass to the same person by calling their color out before you pass.
The students enjoyed my lesson and were happy to come to physical education class today. Mr. Bliss told me I could have demonstrated a little more and actually act out each activity. Some students learn visually so demonstrations are very important. I feel like each day I teach I become more confident and I am having so much fun doing it.
